About Us

St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Pazhayapally Ahmadi, Kuwait, its beginning back to 1934. It is a parish of Malankara Orthodox Church, which is founded by St.Thomas , the Apostle of Jesus Christ in AD 52.

 

The journey of Orthodox Christians from Malankara (Kerala) to the Gulf began with the development of the Gulf countries. Our parish traces its beginnings back to 1934 when  Kuwait Oil Company started. 


Our Parish in under the diocese of Calcutta. St.Thomas  Indian Orthodox Pazhayapally is located in Ahmadi, the oil rich area in Kuwait.  Around 650 members were registered with Parish.

Brief Church History

 

1934  Orthodox and other Christian  believers in Ahmadi started a Prayer Group 
26th may 1950   Prayer Group named as Orthodox Syrian Christian Congregation with 36 members
14th May 1950  First Holy Qurbana by Rev.V. I. Abraham
23rd Aug 1953   First Episcopal Visit by HG Daniel Mar Philexinos of Thumpamon diocese
6th Oct 1956      Worship place shifted to St. Paul's Church, Ahmadi Inter congregation Committee started and Church  became a member of ICC
10th May 1959  Formation of Sunday school with 12 students.
30th Jan 1960    Changed name to Orthodox Syrian Christian Congregation (Malayalam)
28th Sep 1960   First  Diocesan  Metropolitan HG Alexious Mar Theodius of Bethany replaced by HG Mathews Mar Athanasious  ( H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews I)
29th may 1961  Our Church came under newly formed diocese   "Bahya Kerala Bhadrsanom "
1961-62              Rev.Fr. George Kurian (itinerant) started Holy Qurbana on all 4th Fridays
1962                    Appointed permanent vicar ( Rev. Fr. C V John) for Ahmadi and Kuwait.,
 
22nd- 28th Feb 1965  .Catholicose of the East and Malankara Metropolitan H.H. Moran Mar baselious Ougen I , along with H.G. Daniel Mar Philexinos of Thumpamon diocese and H. G. Paulose Mar Philexinos of Kandanadu visited our parish with The Holy relics of St. Thomas
 
1979                Rev.Fr.James E Mathew a member of our Parish started Holy Qurbana on all 2nd Fridays also.
1981                Cottage prayer started on 4th Fridays by the Vicar Rev. Fr. P Philipose
1983                Sick Aid Charity Box (Parumalavanchi) initiated.
2nd Aug 1990  Iraqi Invasion to Kuwait
27th Sept 1991 Holy worship reinstated after invasion
1995                    Dedicated our church as "St.Thomas Indian Orthodox Syrian Church"
1st June 1997     Appointed resident vicar on full time basis. First Resident Vicar - Rev. Fr. G. Varghese.
2002                    Youth Movement Started.
2002                    Marthamariam Samajom Started
2002                    MGOCSM Started
2006                    Church Website launched
2009-2010         75th anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) celebrated from 1st April 2009 to 31st march 2010
2011                   Contributed 1st Installment of  Rs 15 Lakhs to St Gregorios International  Cancer Center,Parumala.
